Our u14 ladies travelled to Castlehaven yesterday evening to play Rosscarbery in their West Cork final. After a great game of football,it was the girls in blue who emerged victorious to take the honours on the night. Despite playing against a good breeze it was Rosscarbery who started this game the strongest. They registered 1.2 without reply in the first six minutes before Emily o Neill registered Bantry's first score with a cracking goal in the eight minute. This settled any Bantry nerves and a fine point from Emma Harrington on eleven minutes brought them well back into this game.Rosscarbery pointed again on thirteen minutes but a purple patch from Bantry which saw them hit 4.2 in ten minutes including efforts from Emily o Neill,Fia Russell,Callie o Donoghue,Emma Harrington and Kacey Cotter left the girls in blue in a strong position at half time leading on a scoreline of 6.5 to 1.5.
The second half of this game was a much tighter affair with both teams putting in a tremendous effort and it was end to end stuff from both sides.
Now playing with the wind Rosscarbery came out of the traps at a lightning pace and threw everything at Bantry in the opening exchanges and were rewarded with 1.2 inside the first three minutes to put them back in contention.
Bantry however were determined and stuck to their task well and two points from Callie o Donoghue in the fourth and seventh minutes kept them at arms length.Another goal from Rosscarbery on thirteen minutes kept the pressure on but Bantry's defence was coping admirably in front of goalkeeper Layla Rose Kingston Fitzgerald.Bantry's midfield was also putting in a serious effort and along with their half forward counterparts were dropping back to help their defence and minimise the threat of the Rosscarbery forwards.
Another goal from the lively Emily o Neill on eighteen minutes again gave them breathing space once more and now as in previous games, Bantry started to introduce fresh legs off the bench to close out the game and despite two more points from Rosscarbery it was Bantry captain Sophie o Donnell who closed out the scoring with a well taken free in the twenty ninth minute to earn the girls in blue a well deserved win on a scoreline of 7.9 to 3.10.
After the game Emily o Neill was named player of the match by referee Owen Burns and the celebrations started for this fantastic group of players when captain Sophie o Donnell received the cup much to the delight of the Bantry supporters.
Well done to each and every one of the girls and their coaches on a fantastic win.
