Our Junior Ladies travelled to Aughaville last Saturday afternoon to face Dohenys in this year's Junior A County Championship final.
In a highly anticipated game between two very good sides it was Dohenys who turned the tables on Bantry to take the spoils having suffered defeat in their last encounter.
Dohenys, playing with the aid of a very strong wind, opened the scoring with a pointed free on two minutes.Another point on four minutes was followed by two more pointed frees before Bantry opened their account with a well worked goal from the boot of Eve Murphy in the fourteenth minute.Dohenys kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely however despite the best efforts of Bantry's defence and a point blank save from Bantry goalkeeper Seadna o Sullivan in the twenty fifth minute kept the girls in blue within touching distance at half time but it was Dohenys who went in at the break leading on a scoreline of 0.9 to 1.0.
Bantry started the second half strongly with an Eve Murphy point in the second minute. This was followed by a pointed free from Sarah Bishop in the fourth minute to leave Bantry now trailing by just four points.
Bantry were reduced to fourteen players in the tenth minute following a yellow card and now the Dohenys sought to make the most of their numerical advantage and points on eleven and nineteen minutes saw them forge ahead once more. The girls in blue were putting in a tremendous effort all over the pitch and with fresh legs coming in off the bench they tried valiantly to unlock the Dohenys defence but scores were proving hard to come by as Dohenys were working the ball through the hands well.A Dohenys goal on twenty one minutes saw them increase their lead further and now Bantry faced an uphill battle.
A Lucy Coakley point on thirty minutes gave them hope but another Sarah Bishop free in the thirty second minute proved to be the last score of the game as Dohenys held out to take the victory on a scoreline of 1.12 to 1.4
A heartbreaking loss for the girls in blue but they can take pride in the effort given by each and every one of their players who kept up the fight until the final whistle but it wasn't to be their day.
This however has been a very good year for this fantastic group of players having contested both league and Championship finals this season.
Well done to everyone involved. #bluesabú🔵⚪️ Thanks to team sponsor John McSweeney Plant Hire & Tree Cutting Services
