Our Junior 1 Ladies made the long journey to Carrigaline last Sunday to play their Division 2 Senior County League final.
This turned out to be a hugely entertaining game of football with both teams giving it their all in very warm conditions.
Despite playing into a good breeze Carrigaline started the game strongly and were on the scoreboard within a minute with a point and when they goaled in the fourth minute, things looked ominous for the girls in Blue.Bantry were slowly but surely starting to get a foothold in this game however and scored five unanswered points and when they scored a fantastic goal in the fifteenth minute they were right back in it.Another point for Bantry in the twentieth minute was followed by another Carrigaline goal but again Bantry came storming back to score a great team goal in the thirtieth minute and despite failing to convert a penalty the girls in Blue went in leading at half time on a scoreline of 2.6 to 2.4
It was more of the same from both teams in the second half although scores were not as easy to come by with both teams defending well and trying to catch the opposition on the break.Bantry opened the scoring with two fine points in the sixth and fifteenth minutes with Carrigaline following suit in the sixteenth and seventeenth minutes.
Another point from Carrigaline in the twenty second minute left the bare minimum between the sides and it really was anyone's game at this stage.
Carrigaline broke out of defence to score a cracking goal in the twenty fifth minute to give them the edge and followed up with another point on twenty seven minutes.
Bantry kept the pressure on with a point in the twenty ninth minute but Carrigaline were able to hold out to take the spoils on the day on a scoreline of 3.8 to 2.9.
This really was a superb effort from this group of players who gave it their all on the day and despite the heartbreak of defeat can take pride in such a valiant display in what was their third year in a row to contest a league final.
Next up for this group is the first round of this year's West Cork Championship away to Beara in Castletownbere on Wednesday July 8th at 8pm.
