Our U14 ladies travelled to Ballyvourney last Saturday morning to play their long awaited and much anticipated County final against Shamrocks from East Cork
After securing the West Cork title back in early September the girls in blue were looking to complete an historic double.
Bantry got off to a great start with a pointed free in the fifth minute from Sophie o Donnell who then converted a penalty two minutes later to settle any early nerves.
Bantry were playing some fantastic football and two quickfire goals from Emily o Neill and Sara Murphy on eight and ten minutes put them well in control.
The Bantry full back line of Ann Keohane,Caragh McCarthy and Alex Manning were having a stormer in front of goalkeeper Layla Rose Kingston Fitzgerald and it would be the sixteenth minute before Shamrocks opened their account with a free.Bantry's midfield pairing of Sara Murphy and Hailey Hegarty were winning some great ball and driving forward and further points from Emma Harrington and Kacey Cotter pushed the girls in blue further ahead.A cracking goal from Kacey Cotter in the twenty third minute was followed up by Shamrocks second point of the game before points from Sophie o Donnell and Emily o Neill closed out the scoring for the first half with Bantry going in leading on a scoreline of 4.5 to 0.2.
Shamrocks came out all guns blazing for the second half and a goal in the first minute gave them a lifeline but Bantry replied with a fine point from Kacey Cotter in the third minute.Saoirse Cooke,Aoife o Donovan and Caitlin o Neill were putting in a serious shift in the Bantry defence and with Noelle Hurley and Donna French winning some great ball, Bantry's efforts were rewarded with another fine goal from Sophie o Donnell in the ninth minute.
Shamrocks were not giving up however and goals in the tenth and sixteenth minute gave them hope before Sophie o Donnell again converted another penalty in the nineteenth minute to give Bantry some breathing space once more.
As in previous games Bantry brought in fresh legs off the bench with Aoibhinn o Connell,Maddison Hodnett,Hana o Sullivan,Anna Russell,Callie o Donoghue,Anna o Connor,Áine Courcey,Olivia Minehane,Kate Creedon and Ruby Coleman all making valuable contributions to Bantry's cause.
A great goal from the hard working Emma Harrington in the twenty third minute was followed by two more points from Kacey Cotter and Callie o Donoghue before Shamrocks again goaled in the thirtieth minute despite the best efforts of Bantry goalkeeper Layla Rose Kingston Fitzgerald.
Another point from the boot of Kacey Cotter in the dying minutes sealed the deal for Bantry who ran out winners on a scoreline of 7.9 to 4.4.
To the delight of the Bantry supporters Bantry captain Sara Murphy received the County shield from referee Keiran Creed to cap a fantastic season for these young Blues and their coaches achieving a marvellous double of West Cork and County titles.
Well done to everyone involved.
