Our Junior Ladies travelled to Dunmanway this afternoon to face Dohenys in the final game of this year's Junior A County Championship round robin series.Needing a win or a draw to qualify for the County Final the girls in blue came away with a fantastic win to book their place in this year's decider.
Dohenys came into this game on the back of four consecutive wins and were already assured of a final spot but Bantry were also after building up some serious momentum with three wins on the spin so this game was always going to be a tight encounter between two very good sides.
Bantry got off to a dream start with a goal in the fourth minute with Dohenys replying with a point on seven minutes.
With both teams well met scores were hard won and a swirling cross field wind was proving tricky for both teams to negotiate.Bantry were moving the ball well however and further points on twelve and fifteen minutes saw the girls in blue maintain their advantage before Dohenys scored their second point of the game in the twenty third minute.
Bantry were now dominating possession and two more points saw them hold a 1.5 to 0.2 lead at half time.
The second half of this game proved to be a very tight affair.
Again scores were at a premium and both teams were putting in a serious effort.
Dohenys had a great opportunity to cut into Bantry's lead when they were awarded a penalty in the third minute but they failed to convert. This seemed to galvanise the girls in blue and they stuck to their task well despite Dohenys opening the second half scoring with a point in the fifth minute. It was now end to end stuff but an excellent team move in the eleventh minute culminated in a cracking goal for Bantry to extend their lead.
Dohenys were now chasing the game hard and throwing everything at Bantry.A point on seventeen minutes gave them hope but as in previous games Bantry's defence stood firm and again the strength in depth of Bantry's squad was to prove vital.
Fresh legs off the bench helped Bantry's cause considerably and despite being reduced to fourteen players in the twenty third minute the girls in blue showed great composure to close out the game and take the win on a scoreline of 2.5 to 0.5.
This was a fantastic win for all involved and this now sets up a mouth watering County Final clash between these two excellent teams on October 4th. Time and venue for the final to be confirmed.
