PRESS RELEASE FROM CORK GAA Cork GAA's Clean-Up Day a Resounding Success: Thousands of Volunteers Unite for Cleaner Communities

Cork GAA with Cork Camogie and Cork Ladies Gaelic Football Association is thrilled to announce the overwhelming success of its inaugural Clean-Up Day, which saw the association mobilise thousands of club members across the county come together to enhance their local communities.
With the enthusiastic support of the Cork GAA partners Cork City Council, Cork County Council and An Taisce the event was a powerful demonstration of the GAA’s commitment to community spirit and environmental care.

Throughout Saturday September 21st, volunteers from all corners of Cork City and County donned gloves, grabbed litter pickers, and set about cleaning up parks, streets, beaches, and public spaces. The event was a true testament to the strength of GAA clubs at a grassroots level, with players, coaches, families, and supporters working side by side to clean up their localities working in tandem with the Tidy Towns Committees, Garda Siochana and local support groups.

Kevin O’Donovan, CEO of Cork GAA, praised the dedication of everyone involved, saying:

"Our Clean-Up Day has been a shining example of how the GAA can make a tangible impact beyond the sports field. Seeing so many people from all walks of life come together for the common good fills me with immense pride. We couldn’t have achieved this success without the invaluable support of Cork’s Local Authorities and An Taisce. Their partnership and guidance have been crucial in making this event possible."

The Clean-Up Day initiative aligns with Cork GAA’s broader goals of promoting environmental sustainability and fostering a sense of community pride. The participation of Cork City and County Councils was essential in providing resources and An Taisce and the Tidy Towns Committees made available expertise, and coordination to ensure a safe, eective, and environmentally sound approach to the day’s eorts.

Clean-Up Day saw participation from almost 100 GAA clubs, with thousands of volunteers covering many kilometres of streets, parks, and other communal areas. The effort yielded hundreds of bags of litter, recyclables, and debris, ensuring that these spaces are cleaner and more enjoyable for all Cork residents.

Looking to the Future With the success of this year’s event, Cork GAA plans to make Clean-Up Day an annual tradition, furthering its commitment to building stronger, more sustainable communities throughout the county and encourage new membership and support into the association.
